School of Outdoor Studies, Ambleside and Penrith

Bringing together an extensive range of expert knowledge, the combined outdoor divisions of the campuses in Ambleside and Newton Rigg|, Penrith have merged to form the School of Outdoor Studies. First established in 1979 at the Ambleside campus (originally the Charlotte Mason College and latterly St Martins College), our outdoor courses| have a longstanding international reputation for excellence.

helvellynThe programmes offered by the School of Outdoor Studies cover outdoor leadership, coaching and education; ecology, environmental education and management; countryside management; sustainable recreation; media in the outdoors; development training and skills acquisition.

The facilities| for delivering these courses are excellent, with purpose-built Outdoor Studies Centres, lakeside access and indoor climbing walls|. The location of both campuses provides unrivalled access to the Lake District fells, crags and rivers. The School has pro-active links with numerous outdoor organisations together with some very specific partnerships with national organisations in the field. The staff| who teach our courses have a diverse range of experience with national reputations in outdoor activities, development training and environmental education. 

 

The BA/BSc Outdoor Studies| and BA Adventure Recreation Management| both have several modules that are delivered in Spain and France. All courses provide opportunities to take part in international visits as part of an extra-curricular programme: recent trips, for example, have included skiing|, paddling| and climbing trips to the USA| and a number of European countries.
